An Exciting Invitation to Jaguar Racers & Sprinters

Jaguar – now here is a name that conjures up an image of a great racing heritage – something that today’s tin boxes largely have no claim to. It’s time that Jaguar enthusiasts in NSW have the opportunity to sprint or race their Jaguars on an equal footing with each other in exclusively Jaguar events. Here is how you can do it.

The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club is to promote certain Jaguar-Only events in 2007. We realise that initially there will be small numbers participating, but our inquiries indicate that there is so much interest in such events that we will be able to build up a substantial number of competitors. We are aware that there are a huge number of Jaguar competition cars gathering dust in shed all over Australia for all manner of reasons. Why is this? We think that it due to the fact that most current events are unsuited to period cars and are going to do something about it.

Step 1

We plan to run in a series of sprints and hillclimbs initially to get the competition going. These events will be organised by other clubs and we plan to participate individually at first but all times recorded at the event will count towards our own points score and the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club Championship.

Step 2

Providing there is sufficient interest we will progress on to running all Jaguar sub events at selected race/sprint meetings. This may include regularity events.

Step 3

Providing we can get a minimum of 12 Jaguars to race together, we will be able to stage our own race series at Wakefield Park. This will be accompanied by Sprint events for those who do not wish to race directly against other cars due to the higher risk.

Step 4

An annual all Jaguar race/sprint meeting with an interstate challenge as well as continuing with other sprints and races throughout the year as above. Categories Based on the very successful JEC UK series where the categories are specifically designed to keep costs as low as possible, there will be the following groups.

First Group – “Powered by Jaguar”

Any car powered by a Jaguar engine is eligible to enter. It is envisaged that this category will be the first “catch all” group until enough entries are received to subdivide the group. It is envisaged that there will be a minimum of rules and regulations initially until we gather together enough cars to refine the concepts. Then if sufficient numbers come forward we will divide into:

XJS

All V12 & 6 cylinder models both standard and modified. These great cars are now so cheap that it is ridiculous. The XJS racers in the UK are tremendously popular and spectacular. Here is some movie from the UK series

Jaguar Saloons - all models both standard & modified. Once again, now so cheap to buy in the later models such as XJ6 and XJ40. Also there are a heap of Mk 2 racers still out there. If you have one, time to think about what you could do with it.

How Much Is It Really?

As current secondhand Jaguar prices are now laughable, it need not cost a fortune to get a car especially for the purpose if you do not want to use your road car. Early XJS cars in roadworthy condition are selling on EBay from $3500 while non runners are even less. XJ40 are incredibly cheap, particularly the 3.6 litre models. Even if you have an XJS with a dead V12 it is quite feasible to fit a 3.6 or 4 litre Jaguar engine. Ian Francis, a principal Jaguar wrecker in NSW has a large selection of 3.6 litre engines ranging from $400 to $1500 depending on condition. As they are fitted to XJS it is an easy conversion and the motor is reliable and durable. We envisage the most popular groups will centre around relatively lightly modified and standard cars initially. XJ6 are available from $1,000 up – dodgy of course but some cars from Vic. already race prepared have appeared for sale from $5,000. Naturally no racing is cheap and the purchase price is often the cheapest part of the equation!

What Are The Rules

We plan to utilise the basic rules developed by the JEC UK in their very successful race series. These rules are designed to be as cost effective as possible and give every entry a shot at wining the annual championship whether modified or near standard. However, we want to give everybody a run in some form or another, whatever the spec. It all depends on who and what we can entice out.

Who’s interested?

We presently have a number of JEC members with cars who are ready to race/sprint or want to get back into it. But we need more to make the idea work. We have several Jaguar traders and workshops, race promoters and other clubs already running events, who are very interested in supporting the series as it will be good for business. We will encourage sponsorship and publicity for all categories. The club website will expand to report on the events, personalities and cars.

Please note that we need your support to do any of this.If you sit back and wait to see what happens - it won’t!

Invitation

We are having a Garage Day at 2.00 pm on Saturday 2nd September at Bob & Sue Edgar’s home at 25 Ridgecrop Drive, Castle Hill, NSW.

We will see their XJS racer, another XJS and discuss the sprinter/racer proposal as well as talk Jaguar stuff & technical issues.

A draft version of the regs will be available for your perusal. We’d really like to see you there and take your views into account. Why not turn up just for the technical stuff or a chat?

RSVP. Please email Bob & Sue Edgar if you are coming so that we can cater for the numbers.

A small fee of $5 per head will be required to cover costs of some light refreshments.

Ladies welcome, we want you to participate too, not just blokes.

Our subsidised young driver training program is now available for JEC members and their families. Our membership fee is a mere $49 for a couple or $15 for under 25 y.o. it is too good an offer to miss out on. See the club website www.jaguarenthusiasts.info for details and the membership forms if you have not joined already.

Bit dazzled by all of this and not interested in racing? Don’t worry, the JEC is developing other social and touring events that will suit the family and expand your jaguar interests.
