Both Championships down to the wire…
The final round of the JAGDAIM XJ-SPRINTERS series for 2009 will decide the winner’s of both the modified and non-modified class. Rob Sinclair back from missing the last round at Winton due to medical reasons is now tied for first place with the unlikely sprinter, Stephen Yorke driving his Chevy modified sprinter. At the start of the season, nobody, including Stephen, would have given him any chance of taking the trophy against such strong opposition.
The trophy for the non-modified class is also up for grabs with 5 drivers still in contention. Trevor MacKrell has a six point lead over David Thompson with the current Champion, Phil Pearmain and Mike Crosbie a further five points in arrears.

Practice was again a problem for the Wheeler/Randall modified sprinter. Brian Wheeler went out first but was soon back in the paddock, with the clutch once again failing. Co-driver, Gary Randall again spent the day in pit lane unable to record a lap. Hopefully, the team will sort out the problems for the final round of 2009, as the car has shown a lot of potential when going.
First timed session was interesting with Paul Zazryn returning in one of Rob Sinclair’s sprinters and taking the points for the modified class with a best time of 1.59.69. David Robinson in the non-modified class also took the points with 1.59.75, which poses the question, “should the car be classified as a modified or is due to the driver?” Next year will tell.

Rob Sinclair was second in the modified class with (2.01.55) ahead of his brother, Ian (2.10.65) and Stephen Yorke (2.11.54).
Trevor MacKrell was very fast with (2.01.81) taking second place points in the non-modified class just ahead of Roland Tidd with (2.02.55). Paul Duncalf (2.05.73) was having a great battle with Crosbie (2.06.49) and John Larkins (2.07.63). David Thompson was surprisingly slow with (2.10.00) along with Kenna (2.14.89).
2nd timed session saw Zazryn with mechanical problems resulting in his sprinter running rough. His first lap was 2.01.95 but his car slowed and his final lap was 2.21.82. Rob Sinclair in his other sprinter was fastest with 1.59.88. Yorke was consistent in the 2.06’s but Ian Sinclair was faster than his first run, until he almost ran out of fuel, limping home on his final lap with 2.46.10.
The non-modified class saw MacKrell take the points with 2.02.53, ahead of David Thompson 2.03.00 and David Robinson 2.03.17. Crosbie lead Duncalf, Tidd and Larkins across the finish line. Kenna missed the second session.
3rd times session saw Tidd fail to front with the sprinter he was sharing with Robinson and Kenna. It is believed that the car was “tired” and withdrew from competing in the multi-sprints at the end of the timed sessions.

Zazryn again took the points for the modified class back in the 1.59’s, ahead of Rob Sinclair, with Yorke and Ian Sinclair coming to grips with the cold track but recording their best times for the day in the 2.07’s.
MacKrell won the non-modified group just ahead of Robinson (2.01’s), Thompson (2.02’s) followed by Crosbie, Duncalf, Larkins and Kenna.
The placing’s for round 5 were:
XJ6 Sprinters: 1st – Trevor MacKrell (19 points), 2nd – David Robinson (18 points) & 3rd – David Thompson (13 points)
XJ6 Modified Sprinters: 1st - Paul Zazryn (19 points), 2nd – Rob Sinclair (18 points) & 3rd – Stephen Yorke (14 points)
