RAIN ….. caused problems at the start of the fifth round of the JAGDAIM sponsored XJ6 SPRINTER 2007 series. A wet track resulted in the first group of Jaguars recording very slow lap times and the session concluding with a red flag as a car made contact with the armco fence at Dandenong Road corner.
Wheeler who holds the existing lap record at Sandown (1.29.26) could only manage 1.46.99 with his slowest lap, 2.02.70. Rookie, David Robinson was enjoying the conditions and led this group with 1.45.73 followed by Rob Sinclair (1.48.70) and series leader Pearmain last with (1.50.40).
The rain had eased but the track was still declared wet as the second group of Jaguars hit the track. Garry Randall having his first drive for the season in the Jagdaim sprinter settled in with a best time of 1.46.28, followed by Hugh Sinclair 1.47.37 and Kenna 1.48.91, however, Trevor Mackrell had his first session win, with the fastest lap 1.42.38.
The track was dry for the second session and most of the first group was up to 15 seconds faster. Wheeler (1.31.17) took the points from Rob Sinclair, with MacKrell third ahead of Robinson, Pearmain, Randall, Kenna and Hugh Sinclair.
Series leader Pearmain was having a shocker. Having run at Winton the day before, he was off the pace, loosing valuable championship points to both Wheeler and Sinclair. Rob Sinclair took another 2 seconds off his previous best time (1.31.06) but was still trailed Wheeler (1.30.90). Robinson (1.34.31) was next with Pearmain's best lap for the day (1.35.19) and MacKrell (1.35.52). Randall (1.36.06) was next with Kenna dropping 3 seconds to 1.39.85 and Hugh Sinclair (1.40.90). The Sprinters round winner was Wheeler from MacKrell and Rob Sinclair. The 2007 JAGDAIM Sprinter series is still wide open with Pearmain 9 points in front of Rob Sinclair and 13 more than Wheeler. These three drivers should make up the podium for the series but in what order is still unknown. The Super Sprint held at the end of the day saw Rob Sinclair record his fastest ever lap at Sandown. In a superb drive, Rob on lap four finally lapped faster than Wheeler recording 1.30.35. Rob Sinclair, Brian Wheeler, Mike Crosbie and former Sprinter, Paul Zazryn head to Phillip Island for the 6 hour relay event next month. Mike competing in his first 6 hour joins the experienced CAULFIELD JAG SPRINTERS team who managed 4 th outright in 2006. The sixth and last round of the JAGDAIM XJ6 SPRINTER/LITES 2007 series will be run at Sandown International Racetrack on Saturday 3 rd November 2007.
