SANDOWN
SHOWDOWN…..with
only 1 point separating the leaders in the Sprinters and 6 points
difference in the Lites, four very nervous drivers paid particular
attention to scrutineering and the drivers briefing, ensuring that
they would not be prevented from running the final round of the
JAGDAIM 2005 series, sponsored by ON LINE PERFORMANCE AUTOS.
The passenger
session passed without any problems. Next was the practice session
and the front runners in the Sprinters class, Mulholland & Pearmain
completed their run and were waiting for the first timed session
and points for the day. However practice was not good for Sinclair,
in third place and with a minor chance of taking out the championship;
when his Sprinter came to a complete stop out of turn one. The other
mishap was the Hogan Motorsport entry with co-driver Anthony Larkins
slowing dramatically. Mulholland was looking worried with his car
limping back to the pits. The car had punctured the front inside
tyre and as luck would have it, Mulholland had insisted that the
team pack spares for the final round. Jim confessed that the team
has not packed spares in the past.
Sinclair’s
electrical problem was quickly solved with John Larkins, Stuart
Reeves and others swarming over the car and locating a loose nut
on one of the switches as the reason for the loss of power to shut
the car down.
With
points up for grab, Mulholland and Pearmain were the first group
out. Pearmain was on a charge and had put his head lights on to
intimidate Mulholland. The lights were not working and Phil decided
he could do with more speed, so he lent over and turned off the
switch…however it was not the headlight switch but the ignition
key. Instead of an increase in horsepower, Phil was confronted with
a complete loss of power. With the ignition key turned back on,
Phil could still not catch Mulholland who recorded a 1.31.45. But
then Mulholland did not count on his co-driver, Anthony Larkins
recording a 1.29.91 to take a win in the first timed session. Pearmain
was third with 1.32.77 and Sinclair close behind on 1.33.48. Duncalf
was next followed by Kenna and Randall.
In the
Lites, Scoble was on another charge with a 1.39.42 (just above his
existing lap record of 1.39.31. Scott was next fastest with a 1.42.38
and Leyton was just in front of John Larkins with both in the 1.44’s.
Second
timed session results were Mulholland from Pearmain, with both traveling
slower than their previous and the improver in Sinclair, who was
now down to 1.33.37. Anthony Larkins was back into the 1.34’s
and the positions in the remainder of the field were unchanged.
Things
were a little different in the Lites. Leyton checked his mirror
at the end of the back straight, next to the old gum tree, only
to see Scoble’s Lite completely filling the mirror. Leyton
then looked back at the track and realized that he was entering
the esses prior to Dandenong Road turn. Leyton went into a spin
and came face to face with Scoble, who was still traveling in the
correct direction. Leyton recovered and managed to equal John Larkins
best time of 1.44.41 later in the session, with Scott faster at
1.41.89 but still adrift of Scoble on 1.40.57.
The final
timed session was a repeat of the second with Mulholland taking
the points for the Sprinters and Scoble the Lites. The final round
of the series was run down to the wire resulting in the closet finish
for both classes for any of the previous series. Mulholland was
crowned the winner of the Jagdaim Sprinter 2005 series and Scoble
took out the Jagdaim Lites trophy. The Online Performance Autos
trophies were presented to the winners along with the Jaguar Magazine
Perpetual Sprinter Trophy and the Jagdaim Perpetual Lites Trophy.
Online
Performance Auto Drivers Awards were presented to Anthony Larkins
for winning the first timed session and Darryl Leyton who finished
3rd in the Lites.

The Massey
Ferguson Trophy was awarded to Mike Hogan/Jim Mulholland and the
Most Valuable Contribution trophy will be awarded to John Larkins
for his contributions to the association over the years, but in
particular for his assistance this year not only as a driver but
as the Chief Scrutineer.
2006
will see Scoble progress up to the Historic “C” class
racing a Gemini. In fact Murray has just completed his first race
at Sandown in the Historics. Murray will be concentrating on his
racing career but will still be involved with the series as a mentor
and assistant. Murray was one of the original members of the Sprinters
and his name is now engraved on both perpetual trophies four times.
Other news is that Phil Pearmain is building a Mk1 Jaguar to run
in group Nc Historics along with fellow Sprinter, Paul Zazryn. Phil
will still be competing in 2006 as a Sprinter. Jim Mulholland will
be also be moving up to the racing level with Mike Hogan building
an XJS for the State Series. Five time series champion, Brian Wheeler
will be returning to the series in 2006 after having a year off
to settle his business amalgamation with Jagdaim.
The other
good news is that Jagdaim will once again sponsor the 2006 series
and on that note I along with the rest of the Association membership
would like to thank our sponsors for 2005…JAGDAIM, The Jag
Mag (& in particular, Les Hughes), Heritage Archaeology (Michael
Tracey), The Technical Book Shop, Catscrappers, Dutton Direct, Tracer
Interiors & Constructions, Pro Quip & Online Performance
Autos.
On a
final note… Neal McBride who is a member of the Western Australia
Jaguar Car Club and the owner of a XJ6 contacted me a couple of
weeks ago as he was coming over to Victoria and wanted to see a
round of our series. Unfortunately the dates did not coincide but
I did get the chance to meet up with him at the Historics at Sandown
on the 4th November 2005. Neal is a true motorsport fan, who sneaked
out of a family commitment to come to the track. Neal was envious
of the facilities that we have in Victoria but was extremely envious
in that neither his home state or any other state in Australia has
a Jaguar series like ours…sometimes you need to hear from
those less fortunate to realize what you have in your own backyard.
I bet there are other Jaguar XJ6 owners worldwide who are just as
envious as Neal.
Rumour
has it (and you heard it hear before 3AW) that our first round for
2006 will be at Sandown on Sunday 12th February.
Regards,
Ross Coles
