THE
PANDA BEAR RECORDS FIRST SERIES WIN AND SCOBLE CONTINUES SMASHING
LAP RECORDS…
Phil,
Panda Bear Pearmain won for the first time with a win at the Pro
Quip International round of the JAGDAIM AUTOMOTIVE 2005 XJ Sprinters
& Lites Series. Murray Scoble again collected the 1st place
trophy for the Lites class along with another lap record, his fourth
from as many starts this season.
Conditions
were cool with a very strong northerly wind creating problems for
the drivers with an extra 20 kph at the end of the main straight
due to a tail wind. On the back straight some of the drivers were
finding the steering loose, with a lack of grip, as the head winds
lifting the front of their cars.
Newcomer, Darrl Leyton’s South Australian Lite had received
a complete makeover since his debut in round 3 at the Island. The
car has progressed from the original, dull green paint scheme to
a bright yellow with flames emitting from the grill and headlight
area. The teams name has also changed with Adelaide Spray Painters
now the major sponsor.
Gary
Scott also returned to the race track from holidays. Only having
his second run for the year, Gary was concerned with the water temperature
of his Lite when the gauge needle moved to the maximum. A faulty
gauge was found to be the problem and he ran the rest of the day
without any further problems.
Some
of the other Jaguar drivers were still adjusting their braking markers
at the end of the long main straight due to the strong tail wind.
Scoble on the other hand was having a great run in the practice
session and unofficially smashed the lap record that he set only
four months ago by nearly 3 seconds with an unofficial time of 1.38.86.
The Hogan
Motorsport entry of Mulholland & A. Larkins was to suffer from
terminal gearbox problems during practice. The Sprinter was withdrawn
from the timed sessions with both drivers only receiving 1 point
each for the championship round.
This
has opened up the Sprinters Championship with round 5 winner, Pearmain
now only 1 point behind Mulholland with just one round remaining.
The Lites championship is also close with Scoble only 6 points ahead
of John Larkins.
Randall
(co-driver in the Kenna Motorsport) entry was a late withdrawal
due to medical reasons.
With
so much drama in practice the first timed session was just as dramatic
with one of the other cars in the earlier groups discharging oil
all along the main straight from the finish line to turn one. A
static yellow flag was displayed from the finish line to turn one
preventing any passing in that section. Despite this restriction,
Pearmain recorded his fastest lap for the day on lap three with
a time of 1.32.50. Pearmain was closely followed by Sinclair which
was to be the format for most of the day with Duncalf and Kenna
trailing in the Sprinters class.
The Lites
class was dominated by Scoble with a best time of 1.39.36, slower
than his practice time but still 2 seconds under the existing lap
record. The question was not if but when it would be lowered in
the day. Scott and John Larkins were battling for second place with
Leyton still coming to grips with the Sandown track as a first timer.
The second
timed session saw Sinclair & Duncalf record their fastest laps
for the day but still not as quick as Pearmain who once again recorded
another 1.32.50. Kenna bettered his previous lap times by 3 seconds.
In the Lites Scott managed his fastest lap for the day but was still
behind Scoble, with J. Larkins and Leyton who was faster than his
first session.
Four
drivers reduced their respective lap times in the final timed session,
with Kenna, Leyton, Larkins but the honors went to Scoble who got
under the lap record again with a 1.39.31. Larkins was second in
the Lites to Scoble with a 1.42.21 just edging out Scott for third
in the session.
Sinclair
managed to reverse the tables in the Super Sprint with both he and
Pearmain lined up on the grid together. Sinclair got off the line
quicker and despite Pearmain’s car being quicker on the straights;
he could not pass him before the corners.
The Pro
Quip International Winners Trophies were presented to Phil Pearmain
for the Sprinters and Murray Scoble for the Lites. The Pro Quip
Drivers Awards were presented to Barry Kenna & Darrl Leyton
for consistent improvement in their times. A special mention for
John Larkins who is clearly enjoying his motor sport this year with
improvements in the performance of his is car and his driving.
