SCOBLE
TAKES HAT TRICK IN LAP RECORDS…
Murray
Scoble continued his winning streak in the Lites class and set his
third lap record in a row at Winton Raceway. It did not come easy
as the weather prevented fast times with continues rain for the
practice and the first timed sessions. The early conditions were
more suitable for power boats than Sprinters, with water puddles
forming on the track. The drivers were forced to take unorthodox
lines in and out of the corners and this was reflected in the lap
times being nearly 12 seconds slower than later in the day with
dry conditions.
The Kenna
Motorsport Jaguar did not like getting its paws wet with co-driver
Randall withdrawing at the drivers briefing and Kenna only having
one run in practice before putting the car back on the trailer.
With
points for the taking the rest of the drivers fronted for the first
session with the rain still falling and the track still slow and
covered in water in parts. If that was not enough any car that slid
off the track immediately became bogged in the soft off field.
The first
two Sprinters out were Mulholland and Pearmain with Jim the only
driver under 2 minutes with a 1.59.46. In the later group, Sinclair
was second fastest with a 2.01.60 on his second lap and might have
been faster on his third until he spun in the esses and entered
the main straight sideways, mounting the inner ripple strip, scrapping
his exhaust system. Hid did manage to regain control and completed
his third lap some 11 seconds slower than his previous. Pearmain
led the others followed by Anthony Larkins and Duncalf.
In the
Lites class, Scoble was nearly 7 seconds faster than his rival John
Larkins but both of them were struggling for grip with only standard
road tyres.
The
second session was halted on the first lap with a red Mustang spinning
on the main straight and clouting the concrete wall. On the re-run,
both Mulholland and Pearmain got under 2 minutes with Jim fastest
with 1.57.05 and Phil 1.58.09. By the time that the rest of the
Sprinters hit the track, the rain had stopped and the track was
drying. This was to be the equalizer with A. Larkins best of 1.54.19,
Sinclair 1.52.71 but congratulations went to Paul Duncalf with 1.52.48
as the fastest Sprinter for session 2. This was Paul’s first
ever win in a timed session his drive was rewarded with a Drivers
Award later in the day.
Both
the Lites were faster, but once again Murray Scoble showed his talent
with a great drive recording another lap record, his third in as
many rounds with a 1.55.90. It could have been even lower had not
the rear of his car clipped the tyres coming onto the straight forcing
him to spin and loose time.
The final
timed session was a great contest between Mulholland & Pearmain
with Jim stopping the clock at 1.46.44 on his first lap and then
recorded slower lap times for next 2 laps. Phil was getting quicker
each lap and was only two hundredths of a second slower with his
best time for the day being 1.46.67. In the following group, Sinclair
was fastest with 1.48.15, followed by A. Larkins and Duncalf.
John
Larkins turned the tables in the Lites with the fastest time of
1.57.71 and was faster than Murray’s car which was having
problems forcing him to abandon his final lap.
In the
Super Sprints, both Sinclair and Mulholland enjoyed faster track
conditions with best times of 1.46.61 and 1.43.86 respectively.
Although
the conditions were dreadful early in the day, the drivers persevered
and were rewarded with a faster track as the day progressed. In
particular Mulholland took the Catscrappers Winners trophy for the
Sprinters with Scoble taking the Lites trophy. The Catscrappers
Drivers awards were presented to Paul Duncalf for his win in the
second Sprinter session and John Larkins for his win in the third
session for the Lites.

The fifth
round of the 2005 series will be run at Sandown on Saturday 14th
August with Pro Quip International P/L as new sponsors for this
series supplying the trophies. A bigger field of Jaguars is expected
with Leyton returning from South Australia, and possibly three drivers
in the Jagdaim entry including 2004 Championship winner, Wheeler
and his side-kick Redel. Gary Scott the defending 2004 Lites Champion
is back from overseas and should also be running. We may even see
the return of Martin, Crosbie and MacKrell for the 2005 Jagdaim
series.
