JAGUAR’S
OUT FOX LINDSAY’S ISLAND…LAP RECORDS TUMBLE
The Lap
records for the JAGDAIM XJ6 series tumbled dramatically in both
the Sprinter and Lites categories last Sunday, 29th May 2005 at
Phillip Island.
Following
his first drive in a Lite, at Sandown in April, Murray Scoble again
not only got under the existing lap record but slashed nearly 4
seconds off the time. This was achieved on his first timed lap for
the day recording 2.07.53 dramatically under the previous record
of 2.11.27.
At the
other end of the day, Jim Mulholland also created a new lap record
for the Sprinters class with a time of 1.55.95 under the existing
lap record of 1.57.12 for the round sponsored by New Zealand’s,
Tracer Interiors & Construction Limited.
Nine
Jaguars, (check out the pit photo), with 12 drivers were subjected
to the usual Phillip Island winter, weather conditions…(cold
and threatening rain). You could almost expect to see penguins acting
as flaggies dressed in dinner suits.
Scoble
in his first appearance at the island in a Lite set the track and
atmosphere alight with a remarkable first timed lap of 2.07.53,
nearly 4 seconds under the existing lap record. This was to set
the standard for the day for the Jaguar drivers. Newcomer Darrl
Leyton from South Australia was still coming to grips with his first
laps on the island track when the electric fan on the radiator of
his Lite came adrift from the fittings. A few of the other Jaguar
drivers assisted with the repairs and he was ready for the second
timed session. This was not the first drama for the South Australian
team as they decided to ditch the tow car and trailer in Ararat
after a harrowing trip with the trailer swaying back and forth at
any speed over 80 kph.
The Hogan
Motorsport car also suffered in the first session with both co-drivers
Mulholland and Anthony Larkins not sure who had adjusted the brake
bias, to the rear brakes. This caused brake problems with the rear
brakes being overworked which would affect the car for the rest
of the day.
At the
end of the first session for the Sprinters, last year’s champion,
Wheeler in his first run for the year recorded the fastest time
with a 1.57.51, followed by Mulholland, Redel, Pearmain, Sinclair,
Randall, Duncalf, Kenna and A. Larkins. In the Lites Scoble took
line honors with a new lap record followed by J. Larkins and newcomer,
Leyton.
The second
session was without incident or new lap records with only Redel
causing any concern with a “tank slapper” loose coming
out of turn one into Southern Loop. The positions remained the same
except for Sinclair jumping Pearmain in the standings. Both Kenna
& Randall were getting exhausted as their only previous outing
ended after the first session. Randall was the fitter of the two
and now lapping in the 2.05’s.
The third
and final timed session was highlighted with Mulholland recording
the fastest ever lap for a Jaguar XJ6 Sprinter at the island with
a time of 1.55.95. The other driver’s times were consistent
with the previous sessions except for Redel recording a sub-2 minute
lap of 1.59.35. Leyton did not front for the final session with
his car refusing to start despite numerous Jaguar mechanics under
the bonnet.
The Tracer
Interiors & Construction Ltd trophies for the winners on the
day were presented to Brian Wheeler for the Sprinters and Murray
Scoble for the Lites. The Drivers awards went to Jim Mulholland
for setting a new lap record and to Gary Randall for his times in
a Sprinter. This was the first time that the Kenna/Randall car had
completed a full track day.
In my
last report I omitted the Drivers Awards. The Technical Book Shop
trophies were awarded to Anthony Larkins for his great drive in
the Hogan Motorsport entry and also to Mike Hogan for his assistance
to the series.
